Agenda of the evening

You, sweetheart, who lives for sound that hits the soul—this is your night. On 26th June 2025, step into The Water Rats, for a London live music concert that charges the air with rhythm, truth, and spirit. Ese & The Vooduu People bring two sets of soul-jazz rock-n-roll that’s bold, raw, and rooted. Frontwoman Ese grew up in London with a West African background, shaped by spirituality and soaked in the sound of Hendrix, grunge, and hip-hop. She busked the streets, ran jam nights in Brixton, and built a body of work that spans the raw power of Up In Smoke to the emotional punch of Tainted Love. Their music is part livewire, part confession, and all connection. You’ll hear songs recorded on analog tape, stories lived and told, and new sounds from upcoming releases like Is This Jazz? and Glowing. Get your tickets now, save the date, and come through on 26th June. Grab a drink at the bar, find your spot, and lose yourself in a night that promises groove, grit, and magic.

Ese & The Vooduu People is a band that embodies spiritual connection through their electrically charged soul and jazz-infused rock-n-roll. Frontwoman and guitarist Ese was destined to be a musician. She heard ‘Voodoo Child’ by Jimi Hendrix, and never looked back. Being London born with a West African background, elements of traditional spirituality had as much of an influence raising her as grunge, hip-hop and r'n'b. “It was almost like music chose me, rather than me choosing it,” Ese says.

Ese busked on the streets of London for a couple years and ran her own jam night in Brixton before finding a place for herself in the studio. The debut EP Dynamite, released in early 2018, is a mix of studio and live material. Released in May 2019, the debut album Up in Smoke features more autobiographical songs including ‘Silver Spoon’ and ‘I Don’t Mind', recorded on analog tape. The band’s following album, Mercury In Retrograde exhibits the dynamism of a live recorded concert at the legendary Troubadour, just before lockdown in March 2020.

Ese & The Vooduu People returned in 2022 with the electrifying, genre-crossing EP Tainted Love. This is the band’s second EP since Dynamite in 2018. Tainted Love explores the acoustic side of the band with a theme of domestic non-bliss. 2023 is looking at two new releases in the shape of the forthcoming EP Is this Jazz?, and new album Glowing recorded at Real World Studios

I've been to several of these events in the past year, and my favorite was the first one. The dancing and the atmosphere made it feel like we all knew each other, creating a fun experience. It feels like friends coming together for jam sessions at the end, which is really sweet. Another aspect I appreciate is having professional musicians involved, keeping the quality high. Overall, I really, really enjoyed the experience. I can't wait to go again!

My flatmate is a singer and she performs at loving room regularly, so I came here to support her. I liked my flatmate’s performance very much but also the third singer Abigael. She made me so emotional, I am really impressed. She was very open about her experiences and she shared quite some deep details. And then her music. I don’t speak Spanish, but it was just beautiful. Her last song was in English and it made me cry. The space is really nice too, I ordered a burger, its tasty and overall its cozy. I didn’t plan to stay for long, but I am already here longer than expected and I am not planning to leave.

I was looking for events online to go with my boyfriend and I saw this one and I thought it’s a nice one to go. I was not expecting the artists would be so good, and now I love it. My favorite artist was the third one, and I am definitely going to follow her on spotify. Personally, I love everything here honestly, also the atmosphere here. You told me you do it in different cafes, and its going to be a different experience every time, so far I love it.

I think it's funny, when I walked in I thought, oh, is this a meeting place? Is this a supermarket or an organic store? But I really like this. It's just something I've never experienced before.

I was thrilled with the idea of incorporating culture, which attracted more young people. I love connecting with people of all ages, seeing different faces, and enjoying the diverse music from around the world. It's a perfect match for us, gathering in the garden with people from Portugal, Syria, Turkey, Tunisia, and more. When I feel down after watching the news, coming here, hearing the music, and seeing young faces cheers me up.
